Board of Education Meeting – June 2024
From Chris Schukei - HPS Foundation
Congratulations to Hastings High School Boys Track Coach Dave Johnson for receiving the first Dale and Brad Feeken Memorial Coaching Award.
This award is truly a community honor since it is a joint effort of the Hastings Public Schools Foundation, the Adams Central Schools Foundation, and the Hastings Catholic Schools Foundation.
Dale Feeken left a lasting impact during his 25 years as a teacher and track coach at Adams Central High School. Dale passed away in a 1995 car accident on his way to Adams Central.
Brad Feeken was a 1994 graduate of Hastings High School - where he still holds records for season and career field goal percentages. He began his professional career in Gretna teaching middle school reading and assisting the boys basketball program. In 2003, he became head coach and remained in this role the rest of his life. Brad passed away in December 2023 after a battle with cancer.
Nominees for this prestigious award must be a current coach of a NSAA sanctioned team at Hastings High, Adams Central, or St. Cecilia High School. Any employee the three school districts were eligible to nominate. Selection was made by a committee that represented all three schools.
The recipient of the Brad and Dale Feeken Memorial Coaching Award represents the transformative power of coaching, upholding the Feekens' legacy of mentorship and service while fostering a culture of positive influence and inspiration for future generations - and this inaugural selection could not have gone to a more deserving person: Coach Johnson coached Brad Feeken, and knew Dale - both as a coach and as a parent.
The award was presented at the Hastings Tribune’s All Tribland Awards banquet - and the response was incredible; and if you have had a chance to see the Foundation’s Facebook page, you’ll see the incredible outpouring of support for Coach Johnson. He truly is one of the individuals that makes Hastings Public Schools great.
