Dear Families:
We are writing to share an update regarding the federal government shutdown that began Wednesday, October 1. Some members of our community have expressed concern about how the shutdown could affect our school district.
The shutdown will have a limited impact on our schools in the short term. The vast majority of our district’s funding comes from state and local sources. In fact, only about 8% of our revenue comes from the federal government, and those dollars are largely designated for specific programs such as Title I, Special Education, and free and reduced-price meals. If the shutdown continues for several weeks, we could begin to feel its effects more directly. The longer-term future of programs like Head Start is less certain and field trips to federally funded museums, memorials, and parks could also be delayed as time goes on. We will monitor the situation closely to ensure we are prepared to address any emerging needs.
Although district operations will not be impacted, we understand that many families may be experiencing financial uncertainty until the government reopens. Please be aware that you can apply for free and reduced-priced meals at any time as a result of loss of income.
We remain committed to keeping our community informed and supporting our students. Should the shutdown extend long enough to create noticeable impacts for our students, families, or staff, we will provide timely updates and resources to help you stay informed.
Thank you for your continued support of our schools and for helping us maintain a consistent and supportive learning environment for our students.
Sincerely,
Christopher Prososki, Ed.D.
Superintendent
