Hastings Public Schools Begins Superintendent Search Process with

McPherson & Jacobson, L.L.C.

The HASTINGS Public Schools Board of Education has selected McPherson & Jacobson, L.L.C., Executive Recruitment and Development to assist them in the important task of selecting superintendent candidates for the board to interview.  McPherson & Jacobson ( is one of the nation’s leading search firms and is based out of Omaha.  McPherson & Jacobson has over 100 consultants located in 30+ states and has conducted over 725 successful searches since it began in 1991.

At an open board meeting on Wednesday, December 5th, the Hastings Public Schools Board of Education discussed the skills and characteristics they are looking for in the next superintendent.  That discussion led to the list below.

The Superintendent of Hastings Public Schools shall be:
  • Committed to Professional Learning Communities and other activities that build collaboration and teamwork throughout the entire school district while embracing accountability
  • A mission focused leader who provides and supports a sense of ownership among all students and staff
  • An instructional leader who utilizes best practices and champions effective teaching and learning
  • A compassionate leader who values the well-being of students and staff
  • A strategic and visionary problem-solver who embraces challenging goals and high expectations
  • A skilled communicator who promotes the needs as well as positive achievements of the district in numerous contexts 
  • A responsive and open-minded listener
  • A skilled manager with fiscal acuity that allocates resources and staffing in the best interests of the entire school district
  • A community leader who recognizes the impact of cultural and economic diversity within the district
  • A servant leader to our school system as well as the broader Hastings community 

Feedback from all patrons is encouraged throughout this important process.  Consultants Derrick Joel and Mike Lucas will conduct an open “Community Input Forum” on Monday, December 17th at 7:00 PM in the Hastings Middle School Commons.  We hope to see you there!

For those unable to attend the “Community Input Forum,” there will be a “Survey Monkey” link accessible on the school website ( from December 18th through December 27th.  It will allow any user to provide their anonymous input on the skills and traits the next superintendent needs to possess as well as highlight the positives of the Hastings community and school district.  The survey will be available in English and Spanish.

Questions that will be asked at the “Community Input Forum” and through the Survey Monkey will be:

  1. Tell us the good things about the community of Hastings.
  2. Tell us the good things about Hastings Public Schools.
  3. What are the skills, characteristics, and traits you’re looking for in the next superintendent?
  4. What are the hot topics the new superintendent should be aware of so they can get off to a great start?

Key dates for the superintendent search include:

  • Application Deadline of January 16th with finalists selected on January 30th
  • Interviews to be conducted on February 5th and 6th
  • New hire to be made official by February 19th  
  •  New hire to begin work on/about July 1st
