5th Grade STEM project with Popcorn

After studying volume in math, some 5th grade students participated in a popcorn STEM challenge. After viewing a video about popcorn, students examined 10 popped kernels of popcorn. Then their challenge was to use their math skills design a rectangular prism container that would hold 275 kernels of popped corn with no wasted space. Next, students built their containers and tested them to see if their estimation was correct. They learned it was easy to overestimate how much space was needed! They also learned some practical applications of computing volume.
