Good News

Board of Education Meeting – April 2024

1. Congratulations to the 2024 Co-Educators of the Year – Jennifer Karl and Kirk Ortegren. Mrs. Karl teaches 1st Grade at Alcott. Mr. Ortegren teaches Math at
Senior High.

2. Congratulations to Christian Yost who was named the 2024 Emerging Educator of the Year. Mr. Yost teaches Vocal Music at Senior High.

3. Congratulations to Greg Mays who received the first Distinguished Senior Educator Award, presented by Roger and Karen Doerr. Mr. Mays teaches English at Senior High. Any staff member with 20 or more years of service to HPS was eligible for the award.

4. Watson Elementary School 5th grade students Amelia B. and Josiah R. recently participated in the National Children’s Honor Choir in Chicago. The singers pre-learned eight selections (in five languages) before heading to Chicago for three days of rehearsals, followed by a concert in the renowned Chicago Symphony Hall.

5. Congratulations to HHS Tiger Basketball players who earned All-State Honorable Mention Honors from the Lincoln Journal Star.
Girls: MaKenzie Nollette, Emma Landgren
Boys: Braydon Power, Caden Block, and Parker Ablott

6. Watson students participated in the ESU 9 Chess Tournament on March 27th.
Jared W. – 1st Place in 5th Grade division
Josia R. – 2nd Place in 5th Grade division
Trent S. – 2nd Place in 3rd Grade division

7. Congratulations to the following Hastings High Tigers who earned NCPA Academic All-State Awards from the NSAA for the Winter Season:
Boys Basketball – Caden Block, Braydon Power
Girls Basketball – Kaitlyn Drake, Madisyn Hamilton
Boys Bowling – Dalton Newman
Speech – Param Bhatka, Rebekah Evans
Boys Swimming – Moses Rhodes, Robert Schmidt
Girls Swimming – Jaden Ochsner

8. Congratulations to our school nurses! Thank you to the South Heartland District Health Department for recognizing our school nurses for their work educating and protecting students and school staff and assuring health services are available to them.

  • Approve expenses as submitted: Payroll - $3,452,346.85; Vendors - $693,094.83; Total Warrants - $4,145,441.68
  • Approve 2024 Summer Activities Program
  • Approve 2025 Spanish foreign language class trip
  • Approve 2024-2025 Substitute Teacher pay rate of $165.00 per day
  • Approve Classified Staff increases of 4.42% or $1.00/hr and Appendix A for 2024-2025
  • Approve Administrative Salary schedule, reflective of 4.42% increase, for 2024-2025
  • Approve Superintendent’s Contract, reflective of 4.42% increase, for 2024-2025
