Kenneth Martin, a 1980 Hastings High graduate, passed away September 17, 2026. Mr. Martin’s employment included production/factory work at places such as Dutton-Lainson, Eagle Plastics, McCains Foods or janitorial services at Allen’s, Hastings College and other area schools.
Shawn Allen Hatch, a 1987 Hastings High graduate, passed away n Bellevue, Nebraska. A master in the kitchen, Shawn pursued a career that allowed him to share his passion for cooking with others. As a chef, he delighted in bringing people together over delicious meals, creating not just food, but experiences that his friends and family cherished.
Gloria (Leech) Parr, a 1977 Hastings High graduate, passed away on Sunday, October 4, 2026. Gloria worked as a teacher at Centura Elementary, St. Michael’s Preschool, Blessed Sacrament Preschool, and Shoemaker Elementary, where she retired from in 2023. She had a calling for working with young kids, specifically kindergarten where she spent a majority of her 42 total years teaching.
Shirley Sue (Perrie) Campbell, a 1972 Hastings High graduate, passed away Thursday, October 1, 2026. Early in her working years, she was employed as a nurse’s aide at Good Samaritan Society in Hastings. She later devoted her time to being a homemaker and caring for her son Jeffrey.
Arthur W. Conow, a 1976 Hastings High graduate, passed away October 17, 2026. He drove truck and worked construction, most recently working for Werner Construction in Hastings.
Monica Dee (Immel) Kennedy, passed away Wednesday, September 30, 2026. Monica was a loving and caring woman who found great joy in the simple pleasures of life. She enjoyed doing crafts and spending time outdoors, especially camping and fishing. Above all, Monica cherished the time she spent with her grandchildren.
Eldon R. Grothen, a 1959 Hastings High graduate, passed away on September 25, 2026. Education was important to as Eldon he served on the school boards of Kelly District #35 and Wallace District #60. Eldon was a lifetime farmer.
David L. Kluver, a 1977 Hastings High graduate, passed away on August 11, 2026. He was a cook most of his life, working at several restaurants in the south-central Nebraska area, including The Plainsman in Juniata. He was well-known for his prime rib, which was delicious according to all who experienced it. He also worked for Ray’s Pizza and The Kensington, both in Hastings.
Gerhardt R. “Gary” Griess, a 1961 Hastings High graduate, passed away on August 17, 2026. He served four years in the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of Captain. He graduated from Officer Candidate School and served in the Signal Corps. He worked in the safety and health field for most of his career. Among his notable positions, he served as an Area Director for DOL-OSHA, Director of Safety and Mission Assurance at Kennedy Space Center, and as Director of Environmental, Safety, Health, and Quality at the Nevada National Security Site. In recent years, he pursued his interest in writing mysteries. He published two books and was working on a series of mysteries at the time of his death.
Carol Kae Thompson, a 1966 Hastings High graduate, passed away on August 29, 2026. Her career as an art teacher at Hastings Junior High and Trumbull public schools spanned several decades, during which she inspired countless students. Her ability to make art accessible to everyone, especially those who doubted their artistic abilities, was one of her greatest gifts. She was a beloved teacher who used her creativity to touch the lives of her students in profound ways.
Christine Royster, a 1975 Hastings High graduate, passed away. Christine will be remembered for her fierce and spunky personality and her ability to make those around her laugh.
Duane Arthur Buss, a 1962 Hastings High graduate, passed away on Thursday, August 27, 2026. He served in the United States Air Force from May 1966, including a year in Vietnam, and was honorably discharged as Staff Sgt. in May 1970. He was proud to have been on the first Hall County Hero Flight to Washington, D.C. and honored to have received a Quilt of Valor. Duane was employed by Lumbard LeSchinsky’s. In 1982, he began working at Grand Island Memorial Hospital, and in 1987 at St. Francis Medical Center, as a medical equipment repair technician.
Mark Alan Doiel, a 1985 Hastings High graduate, passed away August 27, 2026. He worked at Mid-America Pump as a machinist until he retired due to his health.
Reverend Dr. Harold M. Onwiler, a 1954 Hastings High graduate, passed away on August 16, 2026. In 1956, at the age of 19, he was licensed as a pastor by The Evangelical United Brethren (EUB) Church. He received his BA degree from Hastings College in 1958. He attended The Evangelical Theological Seminary in Naperville, Illinois, where he received his Bachelor of Divinity in 1961 and Master of Divinity in 1972. Pastor Harold later attended the San Francisco Theological Seminary, where he received his Doctor of Ministry degree in 1986. He served many churches during his 70 years of ministry in Illinois, Nebraska and Texas. In 1968, through a merger between the EUB and The Methodist Church, he became a United Methodist pastor.
Connie J. Davis, a 1969 Hastings High graduate, passed away Sunday, August 9, 2026. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, proud grandmother, and a woman whose kindness and love touched the lives of everyone around her. She will be remembered for the joy she brought to her family, her unwavering devotion to those she loved, and the many little things that made her uniquely Connie.
Darlene O. Lyon, a 1956 Hastings High graduate, passed away Saturday, August 8, 2026. She was a member of the Eagles and the American Legion Auxiliary. She also devoted 23 years of service to Good Samaritan, working in the dietary department before her retirement.
Cheryl L. Hinrichs, a 1978 Hastings High graduate, passed away Thursday, August 13, 2026. Cheryl worked at Good Samaritan Village in the dietary department for 15 years.
Alexis Pearl Longshore, 16, of Hastings, Nebraska, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at Children’s Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, after a courageous two-year battle with cancer. Lexi was born on June 9, 2010, in Hastings, Nebraska to parents Chris and Megan. She attended Hastings High School. She loved music, reading, crafting, playing the violin, doing her nails, hanging out with her friends, and collecting gemstones. She had a special bond with her dogs and her two rabbits. Lexi was diagnosed with Stage IV Rhabdomyosarcoma on November 15, 2024.
Fred Durham, a 1961 Hastings High graduate, passed away August 12, 2026. He was a corpsman in the Navy from 1963-1968 and served in Vietnam and was CEO of Santa Ana Federal Credit Union and service manager at Jerry Spady Chevrolet-GMC in Hastings.
Kenneth LeRoy, a 1961 Hastings High graduate, passed away on August 3, 2026. He proudly served his country in the United States Army, including service in Vietnam. He later dedicated more than 55 years to Hastings Irrigation Pipe Company, where he remained until his retirement in August 2019.
Marshall Gaines, a 1986 Hastings High graduate, passed away Tuesday, August 4, 2026. He worked as a property inspector for a private firm, where he was respected for his strong work ethic, professionalism, and commitment to doing his job well.
Arthur A. Smith, a 1971 Hastings High graduate, passed away. He became a pharmacist, EMT and skier when not working.
William Earl Rundle, a 1969 Hastings High graduate, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 18, 2026. William spent many years working at Southern Power District in Hastings.
Kay R. Sommerfeld, a 1979 Hastings High graduate, passed away Tuesday, July 14, 2026. Kay worked at the Bridge for many years and was a shared living provider, where she was known for her caring nature and dedication to serving others.
Marvin G. Kindsfater, a 1955 Hastings High gradute, passed away Sunday, July 5, 2026. He served a four-year active duty enlistment in the U.S. Air Force from 1956 to 1960, stationed at March Air Force Base in Riverside, CA. He served there as a flightline aircraft mechanic, maintaining B-47 jet bombers with the 33rd Bombardment Squadron, with temporary alert duty assignments with uploaded B-47 Bombers at Eielson Air Force Base near Fairbanks, Alaska. After working a few years at Dutton Lainson Co. and ABC Electrical Co., he returned to school, completing an architectural drafting program of instruction at the Nebraska Vocational Technical School at Milford, NE in 1965. He then worked as an architectural designer, detailing building plans and editing specifications for a multitude of commercial buildings and housing projects, while employed with the architectural firms of Edgar W. Burgett and Assoc. Inc of Hastings until 1975, Richard Willis and Assoc. Inc of Grand Island until 1983 and finally the building firm of Johnson Imperial Homes Co., Hastings Building Co. of Hastings until his retirement in 2010. He then worked part time until 2018.
Bill E. Price, Jr., 1968 Hastings High graduate, passed away Monday, June 29, 2026. He received his bachelor’s degree from Hastings College with a major in psychology and stage/drama/theater.
Robert A. Stromer, 1970 Hastings High graduate, passed away Tuesday, June 30, 2026. He was born December 7, 1951, in Hastings, NE, to Donald and Darlene (Burr) Stromer. He farmed for many years, a profession that reflected his strong work ethic and practical nature. He had a natural talent for working with his hands and took great pride in being able to repair just about anything. Whether it was machinery, small engines, or everyday household items, Robert enjoyed the challenge of figuring out how things worked and bringing them back to life.
Dian (Gangwish) Webb, 1951 Hastings High graduate, passed away on Saturday, June 20, 2026. She was a loving mother and wife. She was a homemaker and an excellent seamstress. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, and baking. She loved studying her Bible alone and with others. Dian returned to Nebraska in 2018 to spend time with her children.
Betty L. Magee, 1940 Hastings High graduate, passed away Monday, June 22, 2026. She worked for KHAS Radio before beginning a 42-year career with the Lincoln Telephone & Telegraph Company. During retirement, Betty devoted countless hours to volunteer service. She volunteered for 25 years at Mary Lanning Hospital, assisted with Red Cross blood drives, worked the voting polls on Election Day, and arranged altar flowers at First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, where she was a faithful member. She was also active in Church Circle, the YWCA, and was a founding member of the Betty’s Club.
Cynthia Sue-Ellen Heath, 1974 Hastings High graduate, passed away on June 21, 2026. She dedicated many years of service to Mary Lanning Healthcare, where she formed lasting friendships and found great fulfillment in helping others.
Jayme LeeAnn Karash, a 2019 Hastings High graduate, passed away Friday, June 12, 2026. She worked for Walmart, Graham Tire, the Grand Island Department of Corrections, and most recently the Nebraska Department of Transportation.
Fredric G. Hinrichs, a 1955 Hastings High graduate, of Trumbull, Nebraska. He worked on the family farm until joining the Nebraska Army National Guard. In addition to farming and raising livestock, Fred provided a custom haying service for the surrounding communities.
Wayne E. “Eddy” Borrell, a 1988 Hastings High graduate, passed away Wednesday, June 10, 2026. He was a contractor and worked in the construction field. Above all, Eddy was a devoted father and a proud Papa who cherished every moment spent with his children and grandchildren.
Roxy Jean (Bucknell) Epperson, a 1971 Hastings High graduate, passed away on Monday, June 1, 2026. She was a hard worker and held several long-term jobs, including at Marshalltown and as a Dollar General store manager, before her retirement.
Gary A. Schmidt, a 1971 Hastings High graduate, passed away on Sunday, May 24, 2026. He worked at Allens in Hastings in maintenance and later worked at Fleming Manufacturing as a welder. Gary was an accomplished welder and could build or repair most anything the farmers needed. He worked at Hastings Irrigation alongside his dad for about 25 years. Gary later opened his own shop, Perfection Welding & Car Wash in Blue Hill where he worked until his retirement in 2000.
Marguerite Ann “Maggie” (Plambeck) Lovgren, a 1955 Hastings High graduate, passed away on May 23, 2026. She made her home in Hastings and Kearney, Nebraska, before moving to Holdrege in 1973, where she spent the remainder of her life. Maggie enjoyed playing bridge, volunteering, and collecting and refinishing antiques.
Doris L. “Dody” (Kenny) Sanford, a 1950 Hastings High graduate, passed away Saturday, May 30, 2026. She began her career in 1961 at KHAS TV Station, and she retired in 1997 when her husband became ill, so she could be by his side during his battle with cancer.
Lucille L. (Uhrmacher) Watts, a 1953 Hastings High graduate, passed away Thursday, May 28, 2026. She started her work career at the Strand Theater, then went on to work for several ladies’ “ready to wear” stores and several banks. She finally ended her employment at her “fun” job at LaMar’s Donuts in Lincoln, NE.
Patricia Ann Bigley (Patty), a 1987 Hastings High graduate, passed away on May 5, 2026. Patty spent many years in the car rental industry, holding her final position with Hertz.
Brian Kincaid, a 1988 Hastings High graduate, passed away April 25, 2026. Throughout his life, Brian worked a variety of jobs, most recently working as a copier repair technician until a debilitating car accident in 2009. Of everything he accomplished, his greatest honor was serving as a volunteer firefighter with the Hastings, Nebraska Fire Department.

Suzanne M. (Hinrichs) Weber, a 1974 Hastings High graduate, passed away Wednesday, May 6, 2026. She dedicated many years of service as an assistant specialist for DHHS, Child Services Licensing, where she was known for her hard work, compassion and commitment to helping others.
Laneta Ann “Lee” Krull, a 1958 Hastings High graduate, passed away on Sunday, April 26, 2026. She took great pride in being a homemaker during her children’s early years. She later worked as a bookkeeper for the Kearney County News. Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to open Granny’s Attic in Minden, where she was owner and operator. In 1980, she joined Dale in establishing the Krull Agency in Minden, and together they built a life of shared work and purpose until their retirement in 2000.
David D. Bruntz, a 1968 Hastings High graduate, passed away Saturday, April 18, 2026. He worked full time in the Air National Guard and retired from there in 1991 after 20 years of service to our country. In 1984, his love of the farm brought him back to Hastings when his Dad retired, and he began farming alongside his brother. Dave shared his love and knowledge for this work with his son Danny, who worked beside him until Dave’s passing.
Beverly Ann Dack, a 1959 Hastings High graduate, passed away Tuesday, April 21, 2026. She became a telephone operator for LT&T in October of 1962. She retired in April of 1991 to care for her mom and sister. She helped to start the Special Scoops ice cream parlor in Hastings. She blessed so many with her cake decorating expertise and worked part time at Russ’s bakery as a cake decorator after her retirement.
Elmer Edward Heeren, a 1945 Hastings High graduate, passed away on January 17, 2026. He joined the U.S. Army to serve in World War II. His Army time was primarily spent with the U.S. Constabulary Service in Fritzlaar, Germany as a company clerk. On his discharge from service, he returned to Hastings and found work as a telegrapher with the Burlington Northern Railroad. He became the midnight shift operator of the Burlington “control tower” in Hastings. He started a water softener business in Hastings, gaining customers in the city and neighboring counties. Following his retirement from the railroad, Elmer owned and operated the Adams County Feed and Grain on South Lincoln Avenue in Hastings.
Jerry J. (Peyton) Berck, a 1958 Hastings High graduate, passed away Monday, April 13, 2026. Jerry had a passion for baking and cake decorating, often delighting family and friends with her beautifully crafted and delicious creations. She also enjoyed sewing and painting, expressing her artistic spirit in many forms throughout her life.
Mary Lou Wilson, a 1970 Hastings High graduate, passed away Monday, March 30, 2026. She worked as a waitress for a couple of years then went to work for the ammunition plant in Grand Island for a year. In 1973 she started working for the Dutton Lainson Company where she worked in their machine shop, then moved on to their tool room, then spent the rest of her time as a production scheduler. She retired from Dutton’s after 47 years of service. During her duties as a scheduler, she was also a member of APICS.
Kevin Dale Bunde, a 1976 Hastings High graduate, passed away on December 31, 2025. He served his country in the United States Air Force from 1976 to 2000. He lived and worked around the world, including assignments in Korea, Germany, Italy, Bosnia, and Saudi Arabia, as well as in Indiana, Texas, Wyoming, Oklahoma, and Nebraska. Following his retirement from the Air Force, he continued his dedication to public service as a police officer.
Emma Virginia (Johnson) Sealey, a 1962 Hastings High graduate, passed away on March 29, 2026. She worked at the Hastings Regional Center for many years. She also worked at Herberger’s before finally doing the books for Sealey Body Shop. Ron and Virginia started Sealey Body Shop in 1983. Virginia was instrumental in building and sustaining “the shop” as it has continued to be operated by Nick, Russ, Julie and Russ’ son, Zachary Sealey.
Jeffrey Wayne Beach, a 1980 Hastings High graduate, passed on April 1, 2026. He worked as a maintenance mechanic at Thermo King for 45 years. He was a thoughtful problem solver and wanted to do the job right the first time.
Aletha M. Bennett,a 1946 Hastings High graduate, passed away Monday, March 9, 2026. She worked for Davidson Floral and Hastings Greenhouse before starting Bennett Floral out of her home. She specialized in raising violets, which she sold wholesale to florists. She later worked for the Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph Company, retiring in 1982.
Robert “Bob” R. Buffett, a 1943 Hastings High graduate, passed away March 10, 2026. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from February 4, 1943, to January 9, 1946. Robert was the parts manager at Laird Motors for 50 years, retiring in 2000, and was a member of First Christian Church in Hastings.
Karen Maxine McCoy, a 1962 Hastings High graduate, peacefully went to be with Jesus at her home on Thursday, March 12, 2026. Karen’s life was defined by her love for Jesus, her devotion to her family, and her quiet commitment to serving others.
Alton C. Jackson, a 1963 Hastings High graduate, passed away on March 14, 2026. He served in the Air National Guard from 1965 to 1971 and built multiple businesses, including Jackson’s Car Corner, Jackson Rentals, ARM Properties, and later partnered with his son in Powerhouse Motors and Sports.
Larry Dean Stromer, a 1954 Hastings High graduate, passed away March 5, 2026. Larry was employed by Hastings Elevator Company for eight years. Then Farmland Industries where he retired in 1998.
Walter “Butch” C. Bienkowski III, a 1967 Hastings graduate, passed away Wednesday, February 25, 2026. He co-founded The Garden in 1973, and later the 2nd Street Slammer in 1977, where he served Hastings residents and customers from across the country for over 48 years.
Jaden Marie Ochsner, a 2025 Hastings High graduate, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, Feb. 28, 2026. She was a freshman at Morningside University in Sioux City, Iowa.Jaden’s life was based around Jesus, swim, and her twin, as well as her family and friends.
Danny Dean Niederhaus, a 1963 Hastings High graduate, passed away Tuesday, February 17, 2026. He worked as a CPA/controller for many years before retiring in April of 2005. He was a pilot, a CPA, an author and a controller at an ethanol plant.
Jon Eugene Burchess, a 1962 Hastings High graduate, passed away on February 18, 2026. He was a pharmaceutical salesman for over 40 years and in recent years worked for Anderson Ford, shuffling cars between different locations. He was a Shrine clown (Boomer) for several years and became a Master Mason in 1979.
Timothy “Tim” J. Frank, a 1979 Hastings High graduate, passed away Wednesday. He was rooted deeply in his community. He carried the values of hard work, perseverance and love for family throughout his life.
Dale Duane Bird, a 1967 Hastings High graduate, passed away February 4, 2026. He served his country in the United States Army from 1969-1971. He was the owner of the Firestone store in Hastings, where his strong work ethic and dedication to quality were well known.
Thomas (Tom) Copple, a 1957 Hastings High graduate, passed away on January 8, 2026. He taught music for over 40 years, teaching for 17 of those in South Dakota and Nebraska, prior to working for Lubbock ISD until retiring in 2010. Tom was an avid musician and vocalist. In his younger years, he won the Lincoln Nebraska Area Metropolitan Opera Auditions and advanced to the Regional Metropolitan Opera Auditions in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He appeared frequently as a guest soloist with the Hastings Symphony Orchestra. Later he directed the church choir at First Presbyterian Church in Lubbock for more than 20 years. Besides his voice, his other instrumental forte was the guitar.
Rose M. Henricksen, a 1962 Hastings High graduate, passed away Monday, February 9, 2026. She worked for the Hastings Regional Center for 47 years and was the chief union stewart for over 20 years.
Theodore “Ted” Allen Hermann, a 1955 Hastings High graduate, passed away Saturday, January 24, 2026. He served in the Nebraska Army National Guard/Infantry as a construction mechanic operator. He then farmed until 1985 and then worked at the Chief Ethanol Fuel and then transferred to the Hastings Utility Power Plant until retirement.
Donald Lee Hollister, a 1952 Hastings High graduate, passed away Wednesday, January 14. He was employed by Dutton Lainson in Hastings for over 20 years and Kriz-Davis Electrical in Topeka for over 23 years until retiring.
Debra Dixon, a 1977 Hastings High graduate, passed away January 16, 2026. She was a free spirit and moved around the country enjoying all of her adventures before settling back in Nebraska to raise her 2 daughters.
Kelly Lynn (Timm) Olson, a 1987 Hastings High graduate, passed away Tuesday, January 27, 2026. She had an immense love of all dogs but particularly enjoyed the dachshund breed. She remained a steadfast lover of art and had a particularly good eye for photography. And her birthday made her a fierce patriot. Her love of fireworks was tremendous.
Dennis Dale Jurgena, a 1960 Hastings High graduate, passed away Wednesday, January 21, 2026. He served his country in the United States Navy from October 1960 to October 1964. Dennis built a long and respected career in the energy industry. He worked as Director of Special Projects for KN Energy – Kinder Morgan, where he was known for his problem-solving skills and dedication, until his retirement.
Peggy (Parsons) Haff, a 1955 Hastings High graduate, passed away on Sunday, January 18, 2026. Throughout Peggy’s married life, much of her focus was on being a resourceful and talented homemaker, creating a secure and joyful home life for her family.
Vanessa L. (Rowell) Perkins, a 1976 Hastings High graduate, passed away Sunday, January 11, 2026. She worked at Good Samaritan Village for 18 years and Sutton Nursing Home for 2 years. She loved being a nurse and she was made for that career.
Judith K. “Judy”(Swayze) Craft, a 1967 Hastings High graduate, passed away Saturday, January 3, 2026. She worked in childcare for many years.
Bradley Ray Schmidt, a 1982 Hastings High graduate, passed away Friday, January 2, 2026. He was a member of the Boy Scouts, the Eagles Club, and various pool leagues. He was the produce manager for years at B&R and Allen’s grocery stores.
Martha L. Huffman, a 1962 Hastings High graduate, passed away Friday, Dec. 12. As an L.P.M. she worked at the Hastings Regional Center until retirement. Martha then became a nail tech at the Hair Design Team for many years before retiring again.
Robert D. Barfknecht, a 1946 Hastings High graduate, passed away on December 17, 2025. He was drafted into the Army during the Korean War from 1950-1952. He served in the 47th Engineering Battalion stationed in Fort Riley, Kansas. After serving, Bob worked for Grace’s Bike and Key Shop in Hastings. Later, he worked for several years as the locksmith at the Hastings Naval Ammunition Depot. With the NAD closing down, Bob went to work with his father as a painter. As his father retired, Bob kept the business going until he also retired.
Mike Kirby, a 1966 Hastings High graduate, passed away Saturday, December 27, 2025. Mike loved playing tennis while in high school. He was accompanied by many, many friends with whom he got in a bit of trouble in his younger years. He loved cars, especially his ’69 Pontiac Firebird that his dad helped build with him.
John D. Hamburger, a 1971 Hastings High graduate, passed away on December 25, 2025. In more than 50 years with the family business, Carmichael Construction Company, John worked as a brick tender, trained to the level of master carpenter, and spent years in managerial roles in the company’s third generation of family ownership. As a result, he had a hand in countless public and commercial buildings across central Nebraska and beyond. John’s passion for natural foods and ecological sustainability alongside his craftsmanship led him to build the first wood-fired brick oven in the state, become an award-winning baker (he is survived by his sourdough starter, Carl), and eventually open the Back Alley Bakery in Hastings with his wife.
Eldon D. Bierman, a 1961 Hastings High School graduate, passed away Friday, November 21, 2025. Henwas a truck driver. He served in the Army Reserves. He was a member of the American Legion, DAV, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Eagles. Eldon loved watching Nebraska football, college volleyball, NASCAR races, and tinkering with his tools.
David William Schmidt, a 1973 Hastings High School graduate, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2025. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in July 1973 and served until his honorable discharge in July 1993.
Eric E. Valentine, a 1996 Hastings High School graduate, passed away Monday, November 17, 2025. He pursued his education at Milford Community College, where he earned his degree in electronics. His skills, work ethic, and entrepreneurial spirit later led him to own and operate Valentine’s Carpet Care, a business he took great pride in and poured his heart into.

James D. “Jim” Gerloff, a 1963 Hastings High School graduate, passed away November 4, 2025. He proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1965 to 1967, achieving the rank of specialist fifth class and earning membership in the Four Hundred Club for excellence in marksmanship and physical fitness. After his service, Jim began a 36-year career with Southern Power.
Howard L. Ransom, a 1960 Hastings High School graduate, passed away Sunday, November 16, 2025. Howard spent his career working in the maintenance department at Central Community College, where he served as a painter and was known for his steady work ethic and warm, easygoing nature.
Dana (Lauvetz) Hunt, a 1992 Hastings High School graduate, passed away Wednesday, November 5th, 2025. She worked in advertising for the first 5 years of her career at Barkley (then Barkley & Evergreen). She later decided to focus on her true passions of dance and theater, by working at The Theatre in the Park in Lenexa, KS, various dance studios throughout Johnson County, and 10 years choreographing The Plaza Lighting Ceremony on the Country Club Plaza. She most recently worked with The Jewish Community Center on the KC Superstar competition, conducted private dance lessons in her basement under the name 3D Studio (Dream/Dedicate/Debut), and was a board member of HCU Network America.
Michael John Lind, a 1987 Hastings High School graduate, passed away October 10, 2025. In 1981, the family moved to Hastings, Nebraska, where Mike excelled in basketball and proudly represented the Hastings High School Tigers. Known affectionately by his friends as “Linney,” he formed many lifelong friendships and graduated with the Class of 1987. His professional life in sales took him across the country through positions with International Paper/Xpedx, Avery Dennison, FedEx, and BSN Medical/Essity.
Donavan (Donnie) Dale Martin, a 1954 Hastings High School graduate, passed away Monday, August 18, 2025. During high school and after graduation he worked for Dutton-Lainson Company in Hastings. Moving to Denver Colorado, he was a career employee of Public Service Company of Colorado (now Xcel Energy) working as a lineman/electrician installing service and meters for the Commercial/Household division.

Vernabeth Albers, a 1957 Hastings High School graduate, passed away on October 8, 2025. She had a career spanning over 40 years. As a small business owner, she cleaned houses for many people and owned and operated Danceworks School of Dance while assisting with her husband’s local automotive repair shop, Eldon’s Incorporated. Vernabeth offered piano and organ lessons for many years and was an organist and pianist for several churches throughout her years as a musician.
Charles R. “Chuck” Eigenberg, a 1962 Hastings High School graduate, passed away Wednesday, October 8, 2025. He devoted his career to education, serving as a professor at Hastings College, where he inspired generations of students through his passion for teaching and his dedication to knowledge. His colleagues and students remember him for his thoughtful guidance, humor, and genuine care for others. Chuck will be remembered for his sharp intellect, kind spirit, and unwavering love for his family and community.
Robert “Bob” D. Myers, a 1962 Hastings High School graduate, passed away on Tuesday, September 23, 2025. He was the proud owner and operator of Myers Refrigeration and enjoyed his customers and the work he did. Bob also served his country as a part of the National Guard and Air National Guard and was a lifelong member of the F.O.E. #592.

Zachary Daniel “Zach” Sidlo of Elkhorn, Nebraska, a 2007 Hastings High School graduate passed away September 22, 2025. He was employed at Circo Enterprises as vice president of operations. His co-workers said he was the best and was a joy to work with.

After he stopped farming, he worked at numerous jobs in the Hastings area throughout his career before retiring.

La Rinda M. (Peterson) Chase, a 1981 Hastings High graduate, , passed away August 14, 2025. She dedicated her life to healthcare, working as a traveling nurse — a role she took great pride in. Her compassion, dedication, and deep love for her patients left lasting impressions wherever she went.

Thomas A. “Gus” Ackles, a 1965 Hastings High graduate, passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2025. He served in the United States Navy from 1967-1970 and was a Vietnam veteran. Tom built a 42-year career at Great Plains Packaging/Paperworks Manufacturing in Hastings where he began as a fork-lift driver in 1971 and retired as a plant supervisor in 2013.
Glenda Jean Karr Gleckner, a 1944 Hastings High graduate, passed away on July 24, 2025. She was very involved in school activities. She played clarinet in the band and orchestra and was a cheerleader and majorette. An excellent musician, Glenda played clarinet with the Riverside Symphony Orchestra and directed three popular musical productions for UC Riverside, with proceeds going to student scholarships. “The Forties Follies,” “The Forties Follies II,” and “The Flapper Follies,” produced and directed by Glenda from 1974-1976, featured many of UCR’s students and faculty members, including the chancellor of the university.

She dedicated much of her career to serving others as an administrator in the field of drug and alcohol counseling, where her compassion and leadership made a lasting impact on countless lives in many states including Alaska
Kelly S. Boom, a 1981 Hastings High graduate, passed away Monday, July 7, 2025. She worked for Metz Bakery. Kelly attended nursing school and received her nursing degree. She worked as a nurse for Mary Lanning Healthcare and the VA facility in Grand Island, NE.
Larry Burnell Phillips, a Hastings High graduate, passed Saturday, July 5, 2025. He served in the U.S. Army in the Korean War. He worked for U.S. Electrical Motors out of St. Louis for most of his career, selling irrigation motors to farmers in the Midwest. He retired as district manager in 1998.
Douglas Scott Rasmussen, a 1976 Hastings High graduate, passed away on June 22, 2025. He became a locomotive engineer for Burlington Northern at the age of 19 and operated trains for nearly 10 years. He then began attending the University of Nebraska-Lincoln as a student worker and took a position at landscape services. He studied physics and computer engineering. From 2020-24, Doug worked in facilities maintenance at Lincoln Premium Poultry in Fremont and retired last October.
Dorothy Eileene (Echternach) Larabee, a 1954 Hastings High graduate, passed away on Monday, June 30, 2025. She worked as a receiving room manager at Herberger’s retiring in the late ’90s.
Sherry A.(Stec) Harsh, a 1964 Hastings High graduate, passed away on June 1, 2025. In her professional career she was very successful in direct home sales where she started a business called Princess House Crystal. The business grew and ultimately led Sherry to being a home sales director for western Kansas and Nebraska. In 1985, she joined her brother in a new business venture in starting a restaurant in Minden, Nebraska that would become known as SHEA’s.
Paulette Pool, a 1965 Hastings High graduate, passed on peacefully June 7, 2025. Paulette worked from 1976 to 1977 at Allen’s in Hastings and then in 1977 started working for Hastings Community Development. In 1978, she became the executive director of the Hastings Housing Authority. After 35 years as director, she retired in 2013.

James E. “Jim” Koontz II, a 1970 Hastings High graduate, passed away Sunday,, September 22, 2024. Jim taught and was head boys basketball coach for many schools, including Giltner, Ashland, Clay Center, KS, Springview, and Hershey. He was the principal at Stanton and Lawrence/Nelson. Jim was the superintendent at Newman Grove and East Butler Public Schools where he retired from education. He became a licensed Methodist minister at All Parish in Ansley, Litchfield and Loup City. Retiring in Hastings.
Leslie “Les” Harms, a 1951 Hastings High graduate, passed away Wednesday, May 21, 2025. Les’s career spanned 41 years as an educator while working as a teacher, principal and counselor with students in Kenesaw, Oxford, and Hastings Public Schools. He was also active in his community serving on the board of directors of the Archway Corvette club, Board of Directors of the regional Oliver farm equipment club, president of the Hastings Community Concert Association, Board of Directors of the Adams County Historical Society, board of directors of the Bridge, and was a member of the Kiwanis service group. He also coached his church’s elementary basketball team to a state championship. Les enjoyed many interests, one of which was a strong interest in aviation, which led him to being president of the Hastings Airport Authority, and president of the Experimental Aircraft Association, chapter 544, in Hastings.
Timothy J. Boyd, a 1968 Hastings High graduate, passed away on February 22, 2025. He worked for S.S. Kresge Corporation and later as a stockbroker for Merrill Lynch. In the early 1980s, Tim returned to Hastings to help his mother and brothers with the family business at Hastings Pepsi. He remained in Hastings until retiring and moving to Arizona in 2015. Tim was strongly dedicated to his work, community, and family. Along with being a co-owner of Hastings Pepsi, he was involved in the community through numerous organizations and local boards. He served on the Mary Lanning Hospital Board, Hastings College Board of Trustees, and the Wells Fargo Bank Board. Tim was also an active member and past president of the Hastings Rotary Club.
Saralee Jean (Schlagenhauff) Moffatt (Susie), a 1950 Hastings High graduate, passed away on January 29, 2025. She attended nursing school.
Steven Craig Koch, a Hastings High graduate, passed away on May 14, 2025. He joined the United States Air Force and served his country for four years. Steve’s career at Maytag in Newton, IA lasted 30 years.
Larry Douglas Schmidt, a 1966 Hastings High graduate,passed away Saturday, May 24, 2025. Larry held various jobs, including Farmland Industries, an electrician, a maintenance man at Good Samaritan Village and owner of Schmidt Construction. He retired at age 75.
Curtis D. Fry, a 1978 Hastings High graduate, passed away Thursday, May 15, 2025. He enlisted in the Army National Guard, where he continued to serve until 1985 and worked various jobs, Bimbo Bakery being his longest venture until they closed in 2016. While there, he participated in the workers union, being the union president at one point. As most know, Curtis’ biggest calling was being a baker. He loved to bake cakes, turtle rolls, Christmas candies and lots of other sweet treats. They were always delicious and something the family looked forward to during the holidays

Eugene Allen Stadler, a 1951 Hastings High graduate, passed away on April 14, 2025. He served in the United States Air Force and had a long career with the Social Security Administration. He retired in 1995 and began his second career as a long-term care insurance specialist for Phares Financial Services.

He served five years in the U.S. Air Force and 30+ years on the Hastings Police Department, retiring on November 11, 2003. After retiring from the Police Department, he worked for NAPA in Hastings for 15 years delivering auto parts.

Clara Louise Goodrich, a 1950 Hastings High graduate, passed away March 12, 2025. She was a music therapist and the music therapy supervisor from 1976-1993 at Larned State Hospital in Kansas and also volunteered with non-English-speaking patients there.
Sandra “Sandy” Lea Williams, a 1971 Hastings High graduate, passed away on Sunday, March 9, 2025. She began working as a carhop at Johnny’s and a cashier at Allen’s Grocery in high school. Sandy was employed at Dillard’s for over 35 years in Grand Island and enjoyed meeting all the customers.

Shirley Ann (Smiley) Streck, a 1950 Hastings High graduate, passed away Thursday, February 20, 2025. Shirley worked at Mode O’Day in Hastings for 41 years and also worked at Herbergers until her retirement.
William R. Anderson, a 1956 Hastings High graduate, passed away Monday, February 24, 2025. He was employed by Colorado Academy in Denver, CO, from 1963 to 1966, and Denver University from 1966 to 1967. Then he managed a travel agency in Newport Beach, CA, for a year in 1968. In May of 1968, William returned to Hastings and joined the Western Land Roller Co. He was employed by Western Land Roller as a regional sales manager, distributor sales manager, and then farm equipment product manager. William became a pilot in 1969 and flew numerous aircraft for business purposes, accumulating over 4,000 flight hours. He owned and managed Hastings Skyways, the FBO for Hastings Airport from 1980 to 1984. Selling the flight business in 1984, he worked for several companies as a manufacturer’s representative for Nebraska, Colorado and South Dakota. He retired from active business in 2003 but maintained farming and investment interests.
Richard Lee Gildersleeve, passed away Tuesday, February 4. He worked at Hastings Industries for most of his working life and then worked for Good Samaritan Village until his retirement.
Janice Dorret (Jaco) Kauf, a 1951 Hastings High graduate, passed away February 6, 2025. She attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln where she was a member of Alpha Phi sorority.
Kathryn J. “Jane” (Anderson) Johnson, a 1955 Hastings High graduate, passed away Tuesday, February 11, 2025. She to the University of Nebraska at Lincoln where she graduated with a degree in music. Jane was one of the very few people who could say that she had perfect pitch and was an accomplished pianist. She was involved in numerous organizations in the Hastings community. Those organizations included the First Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon and elder, Chapter G PEO, Infant Welfare Club, Child Development Council, YWCA, Hastings Foundation, George Elliott Book Club, Mary Lanning Hospital Auxiliary, Healthy Beginnings and the Hastings Public Library.
Sharon (Sheeré) Ruth (Bassett) Gleason, a 1956 Hastings High graduate, passed away on February 8, 2025. Sheeré enrolled in the American School of Dance on Hollywood Boulevard. She returned to Hastings in 1962 and began teaching dance to students of all ages throughout mid-Nebraska. Her career as a dance instructor and choreographer lasted for almost 70 years, most of that time being in Grand Island at the YWCA. Sheeré’ taught hundreds of dance students and loved it!
Debra L. McCord-Willy, a 1983 Hastings High graduate, passed away Wednesday, February 5, 2025. She moved to Mesa, Arizona, in 1986 and graduated from the Independent Agents of Arizona Training School and became an insurance agent in 1987.
Connie Kay Schifferns, a 1963 Hastings High graduate, passed away on February 3, 2025. She worked at Gibsons as a bookkeeper while starting her family. Later in life, she worked at Apco as store manager before moving to Muskegon, MI and retiring from Lowes.
Richard H. Theesen, a 1953 Hastings High graduate, passed away Saturday, February 1, 2025. He was married to E. Glennis (Gitt) Theesen from 1957 to 1982. In 1991, he married Roberta Ross.
Barbara Jean (Scarborough) Schmidt, a 1971 Hastings High graduate, passed away January 21, 2025. Barb worked several different office positions before retiring. She enjoyed visiting the mountains, reading, roller-skating, bowling, feeding and rescuing stray cats, and spoiling her granddaughter.
Melissa Ann (Sperry) Eckhardt, a 1971 Hastings High graduate, passed away on December 26, 2024. She held various jobs throughout her career, including positions at Safeco Title in Seattle, Thermo King in Hastings, and Adams County Planning and Zoning.
LeRoy G. Harder, a 1952 Hastings High graduate, passed away Friday, January 3, 2025. After graduation, he worked at the U.S. Naval Ammunition Depot in Hastings and the Hastings Airport. In September 1952, he started Telegrapher School in Pueblo, Colorado. In June 1953, he was hired as a telegrapher/depot agent with the Union Pacific Railroad. They lived all over Kansas while LeRoy worked at many of the depots of the Union Pacific Railroad. In March 1961, he moved his family to Doniphan, where he worked as the depot agent until 1972. He then got “bumped” to work along the Union Pacific line from the Kansas/Nebraska border to North Platte and Omaha. They also worked for a year or two in St. Louis. In 1993, after working 40 years, LeRoy retired from the Union Pacific Railroad. He was also a member of the Doniphan Volunteer Fire Department. After he retired from the fire department he served as the fire chief.

Phyllis (Marquardt) Faber, a 1947 Hastings High graduate, passed away Wednesday, January 15, 2025. She worked at A. H. Jones Company. When her children were all enrolled in school, she went to work for Kealy Construction Co. and then was co-owner and secretary/treasurer with her husband at Faber Gas and Appliance Service for 28 years until retiring in 1991.

Arvelyn Mae Loudon, a 1954 Hastings High graduate, passed away Thursday, January 9, 2025. She started working at Mary Lanning Healthcare for eight years and then went to work at Hastings Medical Lab for 25 years. When the lab closed, she went to work at Snell Publishing for five years. Arvelyn went back to work for Mary Lanning Healthcare until her retirement at 73 years old.

Theodore Wayne “Ted” Shriver, a 1959 Hastings High graduate, passed away Friday, January 3, 2025. He worked at Hastings Produce, Great Plains, and Hastings Industries. Ted’s passion for breaking horses and mules led to him being a founding member of Harness Hustlers Driving Team. His love for dogs led him to own Oregon Trail Kennels.
Janice Carole (Kottwitz) Lukas, a 1957 Hastings High graduate, passed away on December 9, 2024. She worked at City National Bank for 40 years, retiring in 2004 and also worked at Fonner Park and Queens City Downs during the racing season. She bowled in league many years and was a member of the 600 club.
Kristene Elaine (Krueger) Moeller, a 1971 Hastings High graduate, passed away Saturday, December 14, 2024. She owned her own insurance business helping people to file their health insurance claims then moved to Colorado Springs in 1993, where she worked as the manager of a Weight Watchers Center, and was a surgery scheduler for 20 years. She retired in 2015.

Burnham, a 1970 Hastings High graduate, , passed away on October 26, 2024. Throughout his career, Terry was known for his entrepreneurial spirit. He co-founded B&B Market with Michael Bruns in Hastings, Nebraska, and worked for ConAgra Foods. He served as a key player at Culinary Standards in Kentucky from 2002 to 2014 and was employed at Recovery Inc. of Kentucky from 2016 until his passing.

Florence was a member of First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. She was also a member of the Red Hot Red Hatters Club and the Adams County Genealogy Society.
Marilyn L. Theesen, a 1963 Hastings High graduate, passed away Thursday, October 10, 2024. She held a CPCU certification and worked as an insurance broker and partner at Ellerbrock Norris until she retired. Marilyn was a hard worker and continued to work and review contracts even after retirement.
Patricia R. “Pat” (Hohlen) Junker, a 1956 Hastings High graduate, passed away on Monday, September 30, 2024. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and Lutheran Women’s Missionary League.
Elizabeth “Beth” Mary (Kleier) Stark, a 1957 Hastings High graduate, passed away on Wednesday, September 25, 2024. She married Robert Stark on May 5, 1963.
James R. “Jim” Kissinger, a 1963 Hastings High graduate, passed away Sunday, September 29, 2024. He worked as a lineman for Hastings Utilities, retiring in 2009.

He taught and was head boys basketball coach for many schools, including Giltner, Ashland, Clay Center, KS, Springview, and Hershey. He was the principal at Stanton and Lawrence/Nelson. Jim was the superintendent at Newman Grove and East Butler Public Schools where he retired from education. He became a licensed Methodist minister at All Parish in Ansley, Litchfield, and Loup City.

William “Bill” Clair Schlachter, a 1966 Hastings high graduate, passed away on Saturday, August 3, 2024. He served in the United State Navy and then was the Chief of Police in Sutton, NE, for one year. He then began his career with the Nebraska State Patrol in 1972. He was assigned to Lincoln, Alliance, Chadron, Norfolk and then in 1982 to Grand Island. Bill retired from the State Patrol in 1998 as a lieutenant. Following his retirement, he worked for State Farm Insurance.
Verneile “Jean” (Brower) Schumm, a Hastings High graduate, passed away August 2, 2024. She graduated from Bonnell Beauty Academy and was a licensed cosmetologist.
Jerald D. Glantz, a Hastings High graduate, passed away on July 12, 2024. He served in the United States Air Force. Jerald thereafter lived and worked on the family farm.

Jean Gray Miller, a 1948 Hastings High graduate passed away on July 15, 2024 She worked as a teacher, as a children’s librarian and a corporate wife.
John J. Griffith, a 1962 Hastings High graduate, passed away on July 15, 2024. He served in the United States Marine Corps and in the Vietnam War and earned a Purple Heart. John went on to work for LT&T until retiring in 1997.
James (Jim) Hewitt, a 1950 Hastings High graduate, passed away on July 8, 2024. While in law school Jim was associate editor of the Law Review and a member of the National Moot Court Team. He graduated in 1956 and received a ROTC commission in the Air Force. While awaiting the call to active duty, Jim practiced law in Hastings with Stiner and Boslaugh. Jim served as a judge advocate at Forbes Air Force Base, Topeka, Kansas, from 1957 to 1960. He was discharged from active duty as a captain and returned to Lincoln to practice with Stewart, Stewart, and Calkins until he joined Nebco, Inc. in October 1961. He served as vice president and general counsel of Nebco for 41 years, retiring at the end of 2002. While still at Nebco, Jim returned to UNL on a part-time basis as his workload permitted earning an M.A. in 1994 and a Ph.D. in 2003, both in history. After his retirement from Nebco, Jim taught history at Nebraska Wesleyan University, UNL, and Southeast Community College.
Lloyd Valentine, a 1951 Hastings High graduate, passed away Friday, July 12, 2024. He worked for the J.M. McDonald Co. at the warehouse for the winter. Twenty-six years later and several buyouts of the company he went to full-time farming. He also drove the fertilizer truck for the Fairfield Co-op.
Kenneth “Ken” Stuart DeJonge, a 1966 Hastings High graduate, passed away on July 17, 2024. He was a United States Marine. He began his career at Northwestern Public Service in Grand Island, NE. His career moved him to North Platte, NE, in 1986, to become the superintendent of NWPS.

She worked as a nurse at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings, and later worked at the Hastings Regional Center. The last 26 years of her career she worked for Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, retiring in May 2008 as program manager for Psychiatry and Addictive Diseases.

Donald C. 'Don' Kramer, a 1957 Hastings High graduate passed away on March 10, 2024. His ability as a catcher on the American Legion baseball team meant a lot to him.
John D. 'Dave' Bogan, a 1939 Hastings High graduate passed away on April 25, 2024. He served in the United States Army and worked at Industrial Irrigation as the office manager and accountant until he retired in 1987.
Deanna (Weidenkeller) Leonhardt, a 1961 Hastings High graduate passed away February 29, 2024. She lived in Hastings several years with her daughter Kellie before moving to San Diego.
Harold W. Thaut MD, “Hal,” a 1963 Hastings High graduate passed away on March 19, 2024. In 1974 Hal began his work as a family practice physician at the Beatrice Medical Center. As part of his 50-year career, Hal worked as the medical director for the Beatrice State Developmental Center and the Good Samaritan Society. Hal worked for 10 years as a physician in the Emergency Department of Beatrice Community Hospital and retired in 2018. Hal served on the boards of the Beatrice Humane Society and the Beatrice Public Library. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder.

He served in the Korean War from 1952 to 1954 as a Sergeant 1st Class in the 5th Armored Division and was part of Nebraska’s honor flights of the Korean War veterans to Washington D.C. to tour their memorials. After serving in the Korean War, he worked for Dutton-Lainson and Layne & Bowler Pump Co. before his career of 39 years as an electrician.
Mark A Reiner, a 1970 Hastings High graduate passed away on February 10, 2024. Mark owned and operated Reiner Tax & Accounting from 1978 until his retirement in 2020.
Paul R Kothe, a 1957 Hastings High graduate passed away on February 12, 2024. He served in the Army National Guard Reserve from 1957 to 1964. He worked for Union Pacific Railroad. Paul also owned and operated Kothe Construction and Kothe Trucking LLC until he retired in 2004.
LeeAnne (Blunt) Maul, a 1967 Hastings High graduate passed away on February 9, 2024. LeeAnne was a stay-at-home mom prior to becoming a seamstress for Mode O’Day. LeeAnne also taught preschool at Pooh Corner, later becoming a pharmacy tech for WalMart.
Robert G Tharp, a 1961 Hastings High graduate passed away on February 21, 2024. Bob was an auto parts salesman for Sidles & Auto Value for 42 years.
Marlyn (Wallace) Coleman, a 1953 Hastings High graduate passed away on January 17, 2024. Marlyn worked as a travel agent and became a world traveler herself. She particularly favored the Orient. Mar was a master seamstress and especially enjoyed designing and sewing her daughter’s wedding gown.
