Happy Veterans Day from Longfellow Elementary!
On Veterans Day, we pause to honor and thank the brave men and women who have served our country. Their courage, dedication, and sacrifices have helped protect the freedoms we enjoy every day.
The History of Veterans Day
Veterans Day is celebrated every year on November 11 to honor all the brave men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces.
How Veterans Day began:
- November 11, 1918: Fighting in World War I ended when an armistice, or agreement to stop fighting, took effect at 11:00 a.m.
- 1919: President Woodrow Wilson declared November 11 as Armistice Day to remember the end of World War I and honor those who served.
- 1938: Armistice Day became a federal holiday.
- 1954: After World War II and the Korean War, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation changing the name from Armistice Day to Veterans Day. The new name honored American veterans of all wars.
- Today: Veterans Day recognizes everyone who has served honorably in the U.S. military, including those who served during wartime and peacetime.
