Policy compliance results
We compared our policy to a model wellness policy using the Alliance for a Healthier Generation 10-step Checklist.
Areas of strength in our wellness policy.
- The district has a robust structure for including a wide variety of stakeholders in the wellness committee.
- The policy provides clear, measurable time requirements for PE and recess, which exceeds basic goal-setting.
- The policy clearly aligns campus advertising with USDA SMART Snacks standards.
List opportunities for improvement in the wellness policy:
- To meet federal requirements fully, the policy has been updated to name a specific official responsible for ensuring each school site complies with the policy.
- The revised policy explicitly states that the triennial assessment will include a comparison to model local wellness policies to ensure it remains aligned with best practices over time.
Wellness policy goals
- Each school will maintain a diverse wellness team that meets at least four times per year. The team will establish and work toward a nutrition-focused wellness goal. A designated team lead will guide the school’s wellness efforts, serve as the connection between the school and district wellness teams, and report progress toward the goal.

Each building has a wellness team lead who receives a stipend for supporting and developing the school’s wellness program. Wellness team leads meet regularly at the district level to discuss successes, challenges, district goals, and resources related to staff and student wellness. Team leads then facilitate wellness meetings within their respective buildings. Quarterly, all school wellness teams have a representative at the District Wellness Team meeting, which includes community members as well as building representatives.
Each school wellness team develops three goals focused on nutrition education and promotion, physical activity, and health awareness. During District Wellness Team meetings, school teams share progress toward their goals and collaborate on additional wellness initiatives and related topics.
Please see the Building Wellness Policy Progress Spreadsheet for detailed updates and progress monitoring from each school wellness team.
Key achievements
- The creation of a wellness team lead stipend position at each building has ensured consistent representation and ongoing involvement in district wellness conversations and implementation efforts.
- School wellness teams have strengthened awareness of SMART Snacks standards by sharing information with staff and families. In addition, buildings have implemented expectations that snacks brought by students comply with SMART Snacks standards.
- Buildings have expanded nutrition education efforts by creating nutrition-focused challenges and incentive activities for students.
- Participation in the staff wellness program has increased due to the stronger building-level focus on wellness initiatives and staff engagement.
- Buildings have received training in restorative practices, and additional staff trainings are ongoing. The district is also developing a train-the-trainer model to support consistent, district-wide implementation of restorative practices.
Next steps include implementing our revised wellness policy to ensure alignment with the model wellness policy requirements. We will continue strengthening our wellness teams by increasing involvement from community members and parents whenever possible. Our district remains committed not only to compliance with wellness regulations but also to fostering a strong culture of wellness that supports students, staff, families, and our community.
