November is Diabetes Awareness Month
Hastings Public Schools is dedicated to maintaining safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environments for all students. This November, our district wellness team is focusing on a vital safety goal: equipping our staff, students, and families with the skills to instantly recognize a diabetic emergency.
When a person's blood sugar drops or spikes drastically, quick recognition by a nearby peer or adult is the most critical factor in preventing a medical crisis.
Key Warning Signs to Know
Low Blood Sugar (Hypoglycemia) — Drops Rapidly:
- Trembling or shaky hands
- Sudden pale, cold, clammy skin or sweating
- Dizziness, confusion, slurred speech, or sudden mood shifts
High Blood Sugar (Hyperglycemia) — Builds Slowly:
- Extreme thirst and frequent restroom breaks
- Heavy fatigue or blurred vision
- Nausea, severe stomach pain, or fruity-smelling breath
How Our Community Can Help
Speak Up Fast
If a classmate or student looks suddenly shaky, confused, or unwell, notify a teacher or adult immediately.
Stay Together
Never let someone experiencing low blood sugar walk to the nurse’s office alone.
Normalize Accommodations
Continuous glucose monitor (CGM) alarms, classroom snacks, and juice are medical necessities, not treats or disruptions.
The Rule of 15 Protocol
Give 15 grams of fast-acting carbohydrates. This means:
- 4 oz (120 ml) of fruit juice
- 1/2 can of regular (non-diet) soda
- 4 glucose tablets
- A tube of glucose gel
Wait 15 minutes in place. Never leave a person suspected of having low blood sugar alone, as they could faint. Do not let them walk alone while "low."
Check blood sugar. If it is still under 70 mg/dL, repeat the process with another 15 grams of sugar.
Important Notes:
Remember that medical conditions look different in everyone.
Encourage open communication. Looking out for our peers is the highest form of community spirit.
