These are only obituaries that appeared in the Hastings Tribune during 2014 and they are in the order in which they appeared in the paper.

 

  • Horace 'Gene' Peak, a graduate of Hastings High School passed away Wednesday, December 24, 2014. He served in the United States Air Force as a second class Airman from May 29, 1951, to May 29, 1955. He served during the Korean Conflict and received the Korean service medal, UN Service medal, the National Defense Service medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He married Catherine Rose Fry on July 29, 1956, at the Methodist Church in Hastings. He worked for Werner Construction Company for 31 years and farmed all his life. He was a member of the VFW Club in Hastings. He loved all his farm animals, and going to coffee with his family and friends when he was laid off during the winter.

  • Madeline Wolfe Nelson, a 1949 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Sunday, December 21, 2014. She graduated from Hastings College and taught elementary school at Oberlin, Kansas; Holdrege and Hastings, Nebraska. On June 18, 1954, she married Burton Nelson. They lived in Hastings and had four sons. She was a paraprofessional at Alcott and Hawthorne Schools and was the Supervisor of the Pooh Corner Day Care Center and Emergency Protective Shelter for 12 years. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Grace United Methodist Ruth Circle, PEO Chapter FH, and past member of BPW and the YWCA. She was a member of the Hastings Retired Teachers Association, Association of Retarded Citizens and was active with the Special Olympics. She was a volunteer at the Hastings Public Library and a member of the Hastings International Exchange Organization.

  • Claren Kerr II, a 1977 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Thursday, December 11, 2014. He graduated from the University of Missouri in 1981. He married Beverly Phillips in December 1986. Claren was co-manager of Kerr Apple Orchard, Inc., in Lexington, Missouri from 1987-2003. He and Beverly then lived in Peachtree City, Georgia. At the time of his death, he was employed by the Transportation Security Administration at the Atlanta International Airport. Claren always had a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye for his family.

  • Donna Johnston Knudsen, a 1953 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Tuesday, December 2, 2014. Donna made her home in Phoenix, AZ, and retired from employment at Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix.

  • Walter Witt, a 1940 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Wednesday, December 3, 2014. He graduated from Hastings College and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the French "Croix De Guerre" Unit. Walter was employed as a civil engineer with the Nebraska Department of Roads for 50 years. He was honored as a lifetime elder with Capitol City Christian Church. He also served as past secretary of the Capitol City Kiwanis and past Chaplin and Commander of the 40th combat engineer regiment.

  • Jeremy James Thompson, a 1995 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Wednesday, December 3, 2014 after his battle with cancer. Jeremy was born June 5, 1976 in Arlington, Texas. He resided in Fairbury Nebraska until he moved to Hastings in 1981. After graduation, Jeremy worked at Wal-Mart for several years. He enjoyed spending time with his family, the family dogs, watching sports and cooking shows. He also enjoyed listening to music and going fishing.

  • Barbara Jean Dyer Stickels Beck, a 1950 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Friday, November 21, 2014. Barbara married Charles E. Stickels on January 9, 1953. She and her family were confirmed in Saint Mark’s Episcopal Pro-Cathedral in 1964. In 2006, she married William Beck with great joy after reuniting with him in 2004 at their 50th Hastings College reunion. She enjoyed travel especially through Europe, reading, playing bridge, history, and entertaining. She was well known for her love of an active social life. Barbara was a member of Mary Lanning Volunteers, American Red Cross, 4-H Leader, Lochland Country Club, Saint Mark’s vestry and PEO Chapter G.

  • Tony Maul, a 1979 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Tuesday, November 11, 2014. He married Beth Mooney on September 2, 1995. He was a self-employed contractor. He enjoying cooking and baking, camping, dirt biking, family traditions, and loved his dogs.

  • Dale Schroeder, a 1947 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Sunday, November 16, 2014. Dale was called to serve in the United States Army during the Korean War. He served from 1950 to 1952 in the 47th Engineer Camouflage Battalion at Ft. Riley, Kansas. On August 5, 1951, he married the love of his life, Leola “Lee” Krueger, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Blue Hill, Nebraska. To this union three sons were born, David, Steven and Dennis. Dale was employed at the Hastings Tribune for 45 years as a machinist and computer maintenance and operator, retiring in January 1991. Dale was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He spent many years coaching little league baseball. Dale enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, boating, bowling, dancing, playing cards, and especially loved the time spent with his family and friends at their “lake home”at Harlan County. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Just For Fun Car Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Eagles Club. Dale will be greatly missed by all.

  • Timothy Aukerman, a 1969 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Thursday, November 13, 2014. He married Carolyn Yurk on June 26, 1970. Tim worked as a conductor for Burlington Northern Railroad until his retirement four years ago. Since his retirement he has worked as a field representative for Hunegs, LeNeave & Kvas attorneys at law.

  • Dr. Michael McCarty, a 1973 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Thursday, November 6, 2014, as the result of a fatal plane crash in Paulding County, Ohio. Starting at age 7 Dr. McCarty started working to help contribute to his family, which led to the work ethic and success in life. All the time knowing Dr. McCarty this was the only thing I ever heard him personally take pride in. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1973. He then graduated from University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1976 where he was Phi Beta Kappa and University of Nebraska Medical Center in 1981, with high distinction. He finished a residency in Orthopedics Surgery in San Antonio, Texas, in 1986. With all these accomplishments he had many influential figures. One of the most influential being Ralph Phelps, who had a tremendous effect on his character and who he was as a man. On August 1st, 1975, Michael married Deborah Phelps, his high school sweetheart who he had been with since the 7th grade, and to this marriage were born four children. Dr. McCarty practiced in Okmulgee, OK, in 1986-1990; he practiced in Grand Island, Nebraska, at Central Nebraska Orthopedics until the present time, practicing in Grand Island, Hastings, Broken Bow, Lexington, Holdrege and McCook. Dr McCarty had many interests such as flying, grilling, gardening, swimming, travel, the Huskers and all sports especially following all the community kids. Most of all he cherished his children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and siblings. Dr. McCarty served on two medical mission trips to Haiti with Grace 4 Haiti Medical Mission, of which his son Ryan accompanied.

  • Marvel Whyrick Ellis, a 1941 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Friday, October 31, 2014 after a courageous battle with cancer. Marvel’s life was guided by her faith, family and love of “making memories.” She always had encouraging words. Her positive outlook, even during difficult times, set an example for others. Her giving spirit guided her as she managed the bookstore and contributed in numerous ways to the Crosier Monastery’s mission in Hastings. At the age of 60, Marvel pursued one of her lifelong passions by returning to school at the University of Central Oklahoma to study art. Her drawings and paintings will always be enjoyed by her family. During the last months of her life, she considered herself extremely blessed by visits and phone calls from all family members who cherished their precious time with her.

  • Gary 'Skip' Woolsey, a 1964 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Monday, November 3, 2014. In 1983, he married Sherry Scrivner. Gary worked for Hastings Industries, ABC Electric, and was a member of the IBEW electrician's union since 1979. Gary retired in 2008. He had also been in the Nebraska National Guard.

  • Thalia Burns Utecht, a 1945 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Sunday, November 2, 2014. She married LaMoine Utecht in Hastings in 1949. He preceded her in death in 2002. They farmed near Hastings. For many years, she worked at the Jack and Jill grocery stores in Hastings. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church and Zion Lutheran Church in Hastings. She participated in women's Bible study and the choir in addition to many volunteer opportunities in the church. She was at one time president of the LWML at Peace Lutheran Church. She volunteered at the Hastings YMCA.

  • Rick Wilder, a 1978 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Monday, October 20, 2014, after a long battle with cancer. After graduating from high school Rick began working for the Burlington Northern Railroad. During layoffs from the railroad he worked for T & L Irrigation Company. Rick eventually began working for Major Oil Company in Hastings. In 1991 he started his career working for Kansas Nebraska Natural Gas, which is now Kinder Morgan Natural Gas Inc. He worked for them in several different job positions, one of which transferred him and his family to the Kansas City area in 1998. He worked for Kinder Morgan Natural Gas Inc. until his illness forced him to retire. During the summer of 1979 Rick met his future wife, Shari Kyle. They were married June 9th, 1984, in Hastings, NE. They had two sons, Kyle and Garrett. Rick was an active member of the Sons of the American Legion Post 250 in Louisburg, KS. He loved helping with all the events the sons had like the tracker pull and grilling the chickens for the Ladies Auxiliary’s annual chicken dinner on Labor Day weekend. Rick enjoyed hunting pheasant, quail and turkeys. He traveled to Hastings every year for an annual pheasant and quail hunt with his longtime friend, Jay Waechter. Rick was an avid Nebraska Cornhusker football fan. He put his Cornhusker flag out in our Kansas front yard for all the games. Rick loved relaxing with friends, drinking beer and talking. He was outgoing and liked visiting with everyone. Rick also liked barbequing and smoking meat. He and his friends would occasionally enter barbeque competitions in the Kansas City area.

  • Leon Hartman, a 1963 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Sunday, October 19, 2014. After high school, Leon entered the U.S. Air Force and served from January 5, 1965 until December 23, 1968. Leon worked as a television repairman in the area for many years.

  • Rosalea Rogers Pfeiffer, a graduate of Hastings High School and class Valedictorian, passed away Thursday, October 16, 2014 at the age of 86. Rosalea married Robert E. Pfeiffer on August 31, 1947. She was very active in her church and was a member of the United Methodist Women. She enjoyed her nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Her hobbies were sewing, quilting and gardening.

  • Pamela Hemenway Simpson, a 1964 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away on Saturday, October 4, 2014. She earned her B.A. in art from Gettysburg College in 1968; an M.A. in art history from the University of Missouri in 1970; and a Ph.D. in art history from the University of Delaware in 1974. She spent her entire teaching career at Washington and Lee, except for a 1973 stint as an instructor of art history at the Penn State Extension Campus. She spent 38 years on the faculty at W&L and was the first female tenure-track professor and the first female professor to receive an endowed chair when she became the inaugural Ernest Williams II Professor of Art History in 1993. Not only did she pave the way for women faculty at W&L, mentoring them and serving as a role model, but she also played a critical role in the University's transition to coeducation in the mid-1980's. From 1984 to 1986, she chaired the Co-Education Steering Committee, which implemented the University's decision to admit women; the W&L community credited her leadership with the smooth transition. She authored three books, was a popular speaker for academic conferences and also gave talks on the architecture of Lexington and Washington Lee. She served on many forums and societies and was an active volunteer. In September of 2014, the University announced the establishment of the Pamela H. Simpson Professorship. It will be held by a member of the undergraduate faculty who, like Simpson, exemplifies the highest standards of teaching, scholarship, and service.

  • Carol Graham Wolfe, a 1962 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Wednesday, October 1, 2014. Carol married Gary Wolfe; they later divorced. She worked for an insurance company and was a homemaker. Carol shared her passion and love of animals, flowers, gardening and outdoors with neighbors, friends and family and was part of Adams County 4-H for over 35 years.

  • William 'Bill' Welton, a 1957 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Sunday, September 28, 2014. Bill attended and graduated from Hastings College in 1962 with high distinction in mathematics and physics. Bill received his Masters of Science degree with a major in physics and minor in math from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1965. He worked for General Electric in Utica, New York, in the light military electronics division for two years. Bill did research and development of low light level optic systems for cameras employed in Vietnam that subsequently flew on the Gemini space craft. He was married to Sherryl Sweet of Curtis, Nebraska, on September 6, 1965, in Lincoln, Nebraska. Bill returned to Nebraska to work in the family business in 1967. He spent more than 40 years owning and operating Welton Enterprises, was employed by Industrial Irrigation Services as an accountant and business manager from 1995 to 2000, and owned and operated Welton Woodworks from 2000 to 2006. He taught physics at Hastings College during a leave of absence for Dr. Throckmorton. Bill was active in civic and public affairs, serving from 1978 to 1980 on the Hastings Board of Public Works, was very active in the development and construction of the Whelan Energy Center, was involved in the creation of the Nebraska Municipal Power Pool, and served four terms as President of the Board of Directors. He served, as Mayor of the City of Hastings from 1980 to 1984, was a member of the Hastings Museum Foundation Board of Trustees for about ten years serving as President for a time; during this time the Lied Imax Theatre was constructed. Bill was a member of First Presbyterian Church, serving as President of the Board of Trustees and he also ushered for 13 years. He was a member of Hastings Lodge #50, Scottish Rite and Tehama Shrine bodies of Hastings and was a member of Lochland Country Club for many years. Bill enjoyed Lionel trains, reading, traveling, and square dancing.

  • Ronald L. 'Ron' Aulner, a 1978 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Monday, September 15, 2014. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1978 until 1984. Ron worked for Monforts in Grand Island, NE, and was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church, the American Legion, and the National Rifle Association.

  • Rhonda Loebig Zuke, a 1971 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Sunday, August 31, 2014. Rhonda was united in marriage to George Zuke on July 11, 1971. They made their home in Anchorage, Alaska since 2004. For the last several years, she worked at Jo-Ann Fabrics. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

  • Wayne C. 'Tim' Curtis, a 1961 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Sunday, August 31, 2014. He served with the U.S. Air Force from 1959-1963. Tim married Dana Lovejoy; they later divorced. They had one daughter and one stepson to this union, Barbara Curtis and Michael Ingersoll. Tim moved back to Hastings after living in California for 20 years. He married Cheri Hartzell in 1999; she preceded him in death in 2012. They had three stepsons and one stepdaughter to this union, James Szafradja, Scot Szafradja, Chris Szafradja, and Rebecca Szafradja Utter. Tim finally got his first granddaughter after 32 years, Jessica Lee Curtis-Kobelenz. He worked at ITT Cannon in Orange County, California, and Case New Holland in Grand Island before retiring in 2005. Tim attended First Christian Church and enjoyed old cars, grilling steaks, gardening, and was very close to his Chinese Shih Tzu, Charlie. Hanging in the Hastings Museum there is a picture of Tim running a camera for Channel 5.

  • JoAnn Thomas Boudreau, a 1954 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Thursday, August 28, 2014. She worked for Hastings Public Schools in food service, was Director of Congregate Meals, and was a homemaker.

  • William Leonhardt, a 1945 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Wednesday, August 27, 2014. He served in the United States Air Force from December 3, 1948, to September 2, 1952, in Washington, D.C., and Denver, CO. He married Lois Stein on May 31, 1952; she passed away April 26, 2011. He retired from the United States Postal Service in 1983. Bill and Lois lived in Lincoln, NE, and moved to Hastings in 2010. Bill’s hobbies included airplanes, bluebirds, American Historical Society of Germans from Russia, and restoring Plymouth cars and antique tractors. He was a member of the Plymouth Owners Club. He enjoyed doing volunteer work for his church and also spending time with family and friends.

  • Steven C. Adams, a 1970 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away, Tuesday, August 19, 2014. Steven married Karen Portenier on October 27, 1973. He worked as a control operator for Chief Ethanol. Steven enjoyed visiting with family and friends, hunting, fishing, camping, gardening, making fishing equipment, and reading.

  • Robert 'Bob' North Adrian, a 1974 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Tuesday, August 19, 2014. He attended Hastings College and Central Community College. He was a dedicated employee of KHAS-TV for over 35 years. The majority of his career was as Director and Master Controller for KHAS-TV news broadcasts, and known as “the wolf” by many of his coworkers. Bob married Deborah (DeBolt) Mancini on May 1, 2004 at Country Meadows in Hastings. Bob was a beloved husband, devoted son and father. He was a member of Amateur Radio Association of Nebraska (WDOAYY), Four Rivers Sportsman’s Club, NRA, First Congregational United Church of Christ, and former Boy Scouts of America leader. Bob enjoyed the wilderness, camping (no matter what the season), canoeing, cooking, and attending as many air shows as possible, especially those featuring his beloved Blue Angels. Bob was a mentor to many, vivid storyteller, avid reader, history buff, true patriot, and animal lover.

  • Norma Jane Brown Parnell, a 1946 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Wednesday, August 13, 2014. Jane met her future husband while both were working at Eckhardt’s Grocery on South Street in Hastings. Jane was married to Thurman “Shorty” Parnell, of Kenly, North Carolina, in Hastings, NE, at the home of her mother on October 19, 1947. To this union five sons were born, three while in Hastings and two while in Harvard. The family moved from Hastings to Harvard in 1955, where she resided the remainder of her life. Several years after the death of her husband she moved into Harvard House Assisted Living and later to the Harvard Rest Haven. Jane worked at Mode O’Day in Hastings, NE, and the Cornhusker Ammunition Plant in Grand Island, NE. Over the years Jan’s most favorite “job” was being Grandma for the many area children she babysat for as well as her own grandchildren.

  • Wendell Wallin, a Hastings High School graduate, passed away Wednesday, August 13, 2014. Wendell was born November 21, 1942, in Newman Grove, Nebraska, to John A. and Beulah O. (Haave) Wallin. He graduated from Hastings High School. Wendell married Carol Uden on March 18, 1960; she preceded him in death on July 23, 1998. He worked at Metz Baking Company for 32 years and was a member of Eagles for many years, and was a member and President for BCT Union where he was very active from 1963 until the present.

  • Edward 'Ed' Cassel, a 1969 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Thursday, August 7, 2014. Ed and received his degree in automotive technology and received a second degree in computer technology/ data processing. Ed married Mary (Brouillette) Brannigan; they later divorced. He served in the U.S. Army from January 3, 1971 until September 15, 1972. Ed worked in the maintenance office at Central Community College and was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Four Rivers Sportsman Club, and National Rifle Association.

  • Eleanor 'Ellie' Marian Akins, a 1951 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Monday, August 4, 2014. Ellie met her husband Glen while working at The Strand movie theatre. They were married May 17, 1952, in Hastings, Nebraska. Ellie and Glen moved to Tempe in 1962, where they raised their five children and lived out the remainder of their years. Ellie worked in the Foreign Language Dept. at Arizona State University for 22 years, retiring in 1996. She was always an active member in her community and church. When her children were young, Ellie was active in the PTA and also served as a Den Leader in the Cub Scout organization. She became involved with the Tempe Girls Club when her daughters became members and first served as a leader and then later as President of the organization. She was an active member in the Tempe Women’s Los Noches Club, another service organization. In her later years, she enjoyed devoting her time to the Meals on Wheels program. She served in many capacities at the Tempe First United Methodist Church where she was a member for over 50 years. She volunteered her time in the nursery, Sunday School, and Vacation Bible School programs as well as in the church office. She was an active member in United Methodist Women, serving as President of that organization for a time. She faithfully baked cookies for the annual UMW Christmas Cookie Walk for 36 years. She also loved volunteering for one of her favorite charities, United Methodist Outreach Ministries. Ellie was loved and admired by all who met her and will be greatly missed.

  • Coleen 'Adele' Sueverkruebbe Jenkins, a 1958 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Tuesday, August 5, 2014. She moved to Hastings with her parents in 1942. She married Ernest Jenkins on July 22, 1965. In 1963, she began working at Home Federal Savings and was there until 1986. She worked at Hastings Motor Sales from 1988 until she retired in 2002. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and Lutherans for Life.

  • Leland Nordstrom, a 1965 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Friday, August 1, 2014. After graduation, Lee attended and graduated from Milford Technical School. He worked for 35 years in construction in Omaha for E & K Drywall and Allied Construction. Lee loved life. He loved to hunt and fish with his lifelong friend Mike Keeler and had a trailer in Niobrara for 40 years. Lee hunted for geese in Mexico, Canada and Brazil, wild boar in Texas, caribou and big horned sheep in Alaska and antelope in Wyoming. He loved to fish in Montana and South Carolina. Lee's home resembled a taxidermy shop full of mounts. Lee was proud to be a member of Ducks Unlimited and the Safari Club and he often went on hunts with these groups.

  • Dean R. Mosier, a 1968 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Wednesday, July 23, 2014. Dean went on to attend Hastings College and University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Following college, Dean worked at Kohtz Sales in Hastings and then at Mosier Construction as co-owner with his father for many years. He had been employed the last twenty-six years at Adams County Roads Department. Dean married Alyce Stocks on September 1, 1973, and to this union, a son, Thomas, was born in 1983. Together they enjoyed golf, gourmet club and camping. Dean liked to hunt, fish and be outdoors. He enjoyed time with family and friends. He was the past Grand Chancellor of Knights of Pythias.

  • Steven D. Spilinek, a 1972 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Thursday, July 24, 2014 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He entered the U.S. Army and served from September 29, 1973, until July 16, 1975. He graduated from Central Nebraska Technical College. After graduation he worked as an electrician at several local businesses. He worked for Hastings Utilities for the past 33 years. He really loved his job and especially the people he worked with. He always said they were like a family to him. Steve worked up until a few days before his passing. Steve was united in marriage to Julie Zaroban on April 7, 1979, in Hastings. To this union three sons, Bradley, Tyson and Justin, were born. Steve coached his sons’ soccer, baseball, and softball teams. He was a soccer referee for many years. Hastings Community Theater played a big role in his life. He also enjoyed Husker football, the College World Series, the World Cup, and attending theatrical productions across Nebraska. He was a member of the Hastings Masonic Lodge #50 serving as Master Mason in 2003.

  • Wallace 'Glen' Jorgenson, a 1962 graduate of Hastings High School, passed awway Sunday, July 20, 2014. Glen was a member of the United Methodist Church for over 55 years. He was a kind and caring person and very community minded. He was respected by many. The nurses said, "He was an ideal patient."

  • Larry Sturdevant, a 1965 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away following a July 16, 2014 stroke. In 1970 he married Judy Sass of Hastings. Larry earned a Bachelor Degree in Education from the University of Nebraska at Kearney and a Master’s Degree in Education Administration from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO. He is referred to as a loving husband and father, the best grandfather, an adventurous brother, a great neighbor, and trusted friend.

  • Thelma Toews Huls Sole, a 1935 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Saturday, June 14, 2014. She attended Hastings College until 1939 and attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for one year. She taught school at Union, Phillips and Mascot in Nebraska. Thelma became a librarian's assistant in July of 1948 at the Hastings Public Library and retired in 1985. She was also the Secretary at the House of Yesterday Museum for three years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Hastings and was a member of the Degree of Honor Association. Thelma volunteered in the Arts Department at Hastings College and the Hastings Regional Center Libraries.

  • Gregory A. Ellis Sr., a graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Monday, June 9, 2014. Greg served with the U.S. Navy from June 19, 1972, to July 7, 1972. Greg was a self-employed truck driver and owned Greg Ellis Trucking. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, American Legion, Eagles, and was a life member and commander at the Disabled American Veterans. Greg was a member of the Hastings Chapparral Motorcycle Club.

  • Jean Williams Walker, a graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Monday, May 26, 2014. She married Duane Walker on April 30, 1955. She was a homemaker and a member of Garden Lunch Club. Jean enjoyed crocheting, knitting, and her pets. She was a special mother to Bill and Doug Walker.

  • Gary G. Stark, a 1955 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Monday, May 19, 2014. Gary entered the U.S. Navy on July 12, 1955, and was honorably discharged on April 17, 1975. He married Marlis Buhr on Feruary 10, 2004 in Hastings and they made their home in Gering, NE. He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Gering, 3rd-4th Degree Knights of Columbus, Elks Lodge, American Legion and life member of the Catfish-Western Plains USSVI and Big Red Subs Club-USS Nebraska.

  • Phyllis Echternach Secord, a 1961 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away November 20, 2013. She worked for the Lincoln Telephone Company in Hastings, JC Penny in Brighton, CO, Fort Lupton School District and Aims Community College in Fort Lupton, CO. Memorial services will be held Tuesday, May 27, 2014.

  • Charlene Lingelbach Rutt, a 1952 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Saturday, April 26, 2014. She was employed by the Department of Labor as an interviewer until her retirement in 1996. Charlene was a member of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church, PEO, National Association of Retired State Employees, charter board member of Hastings Literacy Council, Altrusa International, was past president of PTA at Morton Elementary School and an honorary life member, and taught Sunday School and Confirmation classes as well as being very active and volunteering at church.

  • Margaret Harpham, a 1966 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Tuesday, April 15, 2014. She worked as a Mental Health Security Specialist at the Hastings Regional Center Bridge Program and retired in 2010. She also had worked at the Kenesaw Corner for several years. She enjoyed crocheting, raising flowers, computer games and Facebook.

  • Edward H. Lightner, a 1930's graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Monday, April 7, 2014. While he was in school, he worked at Fred Blake's Pioneer Meat Market. From 1933-1942, Ed worked for the Johnson Fruit Company. In 1942 he worked for the Burlington Railroad in Lincoln then in 1943 he transferred to the N.A.D. in Hastings and worked as a railroad brakeman and dispatcher for the Naval Ammunition Railroad System. Ed attended Bockerman Auction School at Sioux City, Iowa, in 1946. He attended Real Estate School in Lincoln, Nebraska, where he received his Real Estate and Broker’s License. Between 1952-1984, Ed was elected eight terms to the Adams County Board of Supervisors from District 5. He proudly served not only District 5 but all the people of Adams County for 32 years, serving as Chairman of the Board 18 of the 32 years. Ed spent many hours of work and voted for the best interests of all residents and not just in favor of things that would have been to the benefit of the county seat. Ed married Ruby L. Rutt on April 14, 1939, in Hastings, Nebraska. They lived in Hastings where they established in 1946 Lightner Auction and Real Estate and operated the business including Thursday night consignment auctions and outside sales, including farm, estate, personal property and real estate auctions from 1946 to 1991. Upon retiring, Ed and Ruby would spend the winter months in Phoenix, Arizona. Ed was a 50 + year devoted member of the Shriners, Scottish Rite and Masonic Lodge #317 in Hastings. He and his family were also active members of the Second Presbyterian Church in Hastings, Nebraska.

  • Donald C. Mapes, a 1940 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Friday, April 4, 2014. He served in the Army during World War II. He married Beulah Ernst in 1942. Donald was the owner of "Don's Plumbing and Heating". He was a member of the First Prebyterian Church, Elks, Optimist, and the American Legion.

  • Robert 'Bob' Foote Sr., a 1948 graduate of Hastings High School passed away Sunday, March 30, 2014 at home, surrounded by his family. Bob lived in Hastings, the city he loved, all but 4 years of his life. After graduating from HHS he attended Hastings College. He graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1954 with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration. Bob served in the United States Air Force Reserve as a Staff Sergeant from 1951-1953. Bob met his beautiful wife, Jane, of 60 years at Love Library on the campus of the University of Nebraska. They married on June 26, 1953. His children Becky, Amy & Bob filled his heart with happiness and he loved being a part of the lives of his 5 grandchildren. One of his favorite things was attending their sporting events. Bob took pride in caring for his lawn and planning his high school reunions. He also looked forward to attending Husker Football games, hardly ever missing a home game. Following in his father’s footsteps, he served as President and owner of several businesses: Big G Auto Service Center (which originated as Fleet Foote Oil in December of 1930), Big G Ace & Appliance, and Bumper To Bumper (Champion Auto Parts). Bob never retired, as he went into work every day until January 2014. Bob was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for over 70 years. He was an Eagle Scout with Troop #200. While at the University of Nebraska he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. His pride in Hastings was evident during his life as he served on many boards, committees and fundraising projects. Bob was Past-President of: Noon Rotary, Big Brothers, Hastings Corporation, Hastings Housing Authority, Community Chest (United Way) and other organizations. He helped establish Hastings Economic Development Corporation, the Business Improvement District, and Downtown Center Association. Bob was a member of several Boards: Hastings College Board of Trustees, Hastings Public Schools Foundation, First Presbyterian Church Deacon, Elder and Trustee Boards, Heritage Bank (City National Bank), Hastings Chamber of Commerce, Nebraska Chamber of Commerce, Nebraska Association of Commerce & Industry, Nebraska Broadcasting Corporation, and the Air Force Advisory Council. He was part of the advisory committees for: Central Community College and Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital. Bob was a member of and involved with: Hastings High School Class of 1948 Reunion, Downtown Redevelopment, Hastings City Auditorium Renovation, Hastings Historic Walking Tour, Adams County Historical Society Post Card Book, Lochland Country Club, Elks Club, American Legion, Masonic Lodge #50, Nebraska Retail Association, National Hardware Association, National Tire Dealers, National Appliance Retail Dealers, Nebraska Diplomats, Hastings Jaycees and Hastings Police Department Redevelopment. Bob was involved in several fund drives including: YMCA, Central Community College, Hastings City Auditorium, IMAX and Highland Park Arboretum & Pavilion. Over the years Bob received many community honors: Junior Chamber Distinguished Service, State Jaycees Nebraska Outstanding Young Man, Hastings Jaycees Boss of the Year, YWCA Employer of the Year, Rotary Paul Harris Fellow, Sertoma Service to Mankind, Chamber of Commerce Community Service and Pioneer Awards, Nebraska Retailer of the Year, Arthritis Foundation Humanitarian of the Year, and Hastings College Pro Rege Society. Bob will be best remembered as a caring and generous man who loved people and the community of Hastings.

  • George Shutt, a 1959 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Thursday, March 20, 2014. He graduated from the Nebraska Vocational Technical School in Milford in 1962 with a degree in auto mechanic technology. He worked at Kerr Chevrolet and retired from Farmland Industries after 35 years of service. George was a member of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Southern Hills Golf Course, the Eagles and a life member of the Elks.

  • Delbert Schwenk, a 1951 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Monday, March 17, 2014. He attended Business College and married Marjorie Stonecypher in 1955. He was owner of Schwenk Custom Kitchens for over 50 years and was a member of Lakeside Community Church of the Nazarene.

  • Shelly Will Van Meter, a 1979 graduate of Hastings High School passed away peacefully on March 10th in the presence of her family, after a two-year fight with cancer. She spent many years in the United States Army as an operating room technician attaining the rank of Sergeant before being discharged. After her time in the Army, she attended the University of Louisville and graduated in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. She worked many years in surgery and also served as the director of nursing for the Hastings Correctional Center before its closing. She adored spending time with her family, especially her son Zachary. Shelly loved animals, especially her dogs, and was an avid supporter of Start Over Rover in Hastings.

  • Nita Clark Bramble, a 1944 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Friday, March 7, 2014. Nita began her professional career in 1956 by earning her license in practical Nursing. She earned Dental Assisting Certificates from University of North Carolina and Central Community College in Hastings in 1961 and 1971. She graduated in 1977 from the University Nebraska at Kearney with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Vocational Education/Health. Nita’s employment included jobs at Hastings Regional Center, Mary Lanning Healthcare, Robert McPherson Dental Office and the Nebraska State Health Department/Dental. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Eastern Star Acacia Chapter #39, Queen City Rebekah Lodge #312 and Hastings Quilters Guild. As a Life member of the American and Nebraska Dental Assistant Association, and member of the Mid-State Dental Assistants Society, she held many offices and committee memberships and chairmanships. Nita volunteered for the Heart Association, Mary Lanning Healthcare Auxiliary, and Adams County Immunization Clinic/Head Start. Nita was on the founding committee of the Vital Signs Health Fair and served on the board of directors as its secretary. Nita won the Aloise B. Clements Achievement Award from the Nebraska Dental Assistants Association in 1965 and again in 1981. Nita had an Article called “Evacuation Tips” published in the American Dental Assistants Journal.

  • Richard 'Dick' Spady, a 1947 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Friday, February 28, 2014. He attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and played minor league baseball for the Dodgers each Spring and Summer. Dick completed his master's degree in Agricultural Economics and Farm Management in May of 1958 and then married Norma Wolf on June 14, 1958.

  • Robert 'Bob' Ingram, a 1967 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away on Saturday, February 22, 2014. Bob entered the United States Navy and served during Vietnam on the USS Enterprise. He married Donrue Turner on June 8, 1968, Jacksonville, Florida. They later renewed their vows on July 4, 2011, in Hastings. Bob attended Kearney State College where he studied graphic design and CCC Hastings, where he received his associate degree in carpentry. He worked for Metz Bakery, Image Incorporated, Cornhusker Press, David & Associates and taugh graphic design at Hastings College. He also owned his own business, Ingram Design & Associates, in Yuma, Az. Bob was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and the Masonic Lodge #50. He enjoyed riding his Victory, woodworking, making walking sticks, playing the violin and reading. Bob cherished his family and spending time with his grandchildren.

  • Peggy Benson Schlingman, a 1942 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Friday, February 7, 2014. Peggy was dedicated to the Christian Crafters of the North Merritt Island United Methodist Church in which she was recognized for her participation in the creation of 50,000 "Gift of Love" bears donated to local hospitals.

  • Oliver Bierman, a 1939 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away February 17, 2014. He enrolled at Hastings College, but WWII interrupted his studies. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and was ordered to Camp Croft, South Carolina, for Officer Candidate School. European duty soon followed. He never forgot the scare aboard the troop ship on the way to Europe or the bitter cold during the Battle of the Bulge, or later shaking hands with the Russians on the banks of the Elbe River as the American forces let the Russians take Berlin. Afterwards his unit was awaiting orders to Japan but the A-Bomb happened. He was awarded the Bronze Star and earned three battle stars. Oliver was called back for the Korean conflict and was stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas, where he met his wife, Janet. They had three children, Michael, Monica and Marta, and Oliver is also survived by three grandchildren Jessica, Daniel and Molly. Oliver’s other ventures were in retail where he moved from Nebraska to points across the continent including New York City, Texas and California before returning to Nebraska to earn his college degree from Peru State. He taught world history at Hastings High until his retirement. In retirement, travel was a new adventure, to places such as Norway, New Zealand, Ireland, the former Yugoslavia; however, his most unforgettable journey was an eight week Fulbright Study Tour in Pakistan with Janet.

  • Dolores Maul Jacobi, a 1947 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Tuesday, February 11, 2014. She was a homemaker, worked at Hastings General Credit, Hested's, and was the secretary for Jacobi's Carpet, Linoleum & Tile. She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Altar Society, and Catholic Daughters of the Americas.

  • Leo Stamer, a 1951 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Friday, February 7, 2014. He married Joan Karr on November 1, 1952. He was owner of Stamer's Service Station in Grand Island. After retirement he worked for Anderson Auto Parts. He was a member of Spirit of Life Church in Grand Island.

  • Mike Marsh, a 1971 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Tuesday, February 4, 2014 after a lengthy illness. He studied pre-med at Kearny State College before joining the United States Navy, where he served with distinction. Mike was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Rifle Expert Ribbon, Navy Achievement Medal and Meritorious Unit Commendation, as well as many other commendations during his service to his country. He retired from the Navy in September of 1996 and felt it was a great privilege and honor to have served his country. In addition to serving in the Navy, Mike earned his BS in hospital management from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Ill., and completed a medical assistant certificate program at the University of Nebraska. He loved people and was always willing to lend a helping hand to others in need, volunteering at St. Elizabeth's, HHS, and with the Special Olympics. He was also a proud member of St. John's parish, the Knights of Columbus, VFW Lodge 131 and the DAV. Mike enjoyed a good joke, drawing, painting, animals, and spending time with his family. He was also an avid Nebraska Cornhusker fan.

  • Robert C. Smith a 1940 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Sunday, February 2, 2014. Bob attended Wentworth Military Academy and graduated from the University of Nebraska where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. He graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical School. He served as a captain in the army during the Korean War, serving as a surgeon in a MASH unit. Following his tour of duty in Korea he was transferred to Fukuoka. He married Sally (Sarah) Jane Pinney in 1952. After his discharge from the army, Dr. Smith joined his father in a surgical practice in Hastings. He retired in 1990. Upon his retirement, Sally and Bob traveled to Raxaul, India, serving as medical missionaries. Dr. Smith enjoyed dancing, sailing, wind surfing, scuba diving, traveling and reading. He was past president of Hastings Rotary Club, a member of the American College of Surgeons and a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery. Bob was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he taught Sunday school, was a deacon and elder. He had been a member of the Board of Directors of the American Red Cross, American Cancer Society, Hastings Swim Association, the past District Commissioner of the Boy Scouts of America, and a 60-year member of Shriners International.

  • Roger Whiteley, a 1973 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Saturday, February 1, 2014.

  • Gary L. Harris, a 1965 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Tuesday, January 14, 2014. Gary served with the U.S. Navy from April 7, 1966 until January 12, 1970. His work experience included Real Estate, owning and operating the Shipwreck and other retail sales positions. Gary was a member of Faith Lutheran Church. He enjoyed playing pool, was an avid NASCAR, Cubs and Husker fan.

  • Jeanette Myers Wray, a 1951 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Saturday, January 11, 2014. She attended Hastings College. She was a past employee of the Hastings Tribune in bookkeeping and also worked at Wyerehaeuser and Pay Way Feeds. She retired in 1993 as an executive assistant from Central Soya. She volunteered at the Hastings Public Library and was a member of the P.E.O Hastings, NE Chapter.

  • Delmer Bockstadter, a 1942 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Saturday, January 11, 2014. He worked for Vic and Vera Katzberg on their family farm before and after serving in the Blue Devil Division of the 349th Infantry Regiment from 1945 to 1947 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He married Joan Burr on October 1, 1950, at Christ Lutheran Church in Juniata. Delmer worked and lived on the family farm near Kenesaw until 1987 when he retired and then moved to Hastings. They recently moved to Kenesaw. He enjoyed woodworking, metalworking, photography, reading, collecting and building model trains, and loved music, especially Bach. He played harmonica, and also played drums in several bands.

  • Linda Brandt Meyer, a 1966 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Friday, January 10, 2014, at her home after a long battle with cancer. She attended Kearney State College and then worked at hte Hastings Regional Center and Mid-Nebraska Individual Services Community Living. She was a member of the Hastings Evangelical Free Church.

  • Barbara Flanagan Sprague, a 1952 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Thursday, January 9, 2014. She attended Hastings College, the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and graduated from the University of Denver in 1956. Barbara was passionate about numerous church, community, civic and area organizations including: President of Lincoln Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, Chapter Y PEO, Red Cloud School Board, Red Cloud City Council, Republican Valley Arts Council, Red Cloud Community Foundation, Trailblazer RC & D, St. Juliana Choir, Red Cloud Tree Board, Sacred Heart Altar Society, Red Cloud Chamber of Commerce, REACH, TeamMates, Red Cloud Historic Preservation Fund, South Heartland District Health Board, Prairie Friends Club, Red Cloud Brick Street Committee, UNMC Board of Counselors, Willa Cather Foundation, WCCH Pink Ladies and Area Substance and Alcohol Abuse Prevention Board. In addition to teaching piano lessons for many years, Barbara was a pianist and organist for school music programs, community events and Sacred Heart Church. Barbara had a genuine compassion and desire to serve others. She will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to benefit from her friendship and spirited determination.

  • Edwin Rief, a 1959 graduate of Hastings High School, passed away Monday, January 6, 2014. He was a salesman for T-L Irrigation and was the main pilot for several years before he retired. Edwin was a member of Faith Lutheran Church. He was an Eagle Scout and enjoyed being outside fishing, hunting, and farming.

  • Lloyd Schroeder, a 1938 graduate of Hastings High Schoool, passed away Friday, January 3, 2014. He entered the U.S. Army on April 4, 1942, and was honorably discharged on November 9, 1945. On June 27, 1948, he married Inez Jones. She preceded him in death in 2010. Lloyd was a lifelong Hastings resident and a retired farmer. He was a member of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
